European Workwear Sizing Explained
European Workwear Sizing Explained
European (EU) sizes work differently than UK or US sizes. This guide helps you understand EU sizing and convert between systems.
The Basics: How EU Sizing Works
EU sizes use centimeters, not inches.
Category | EU Sizing System |
|---|---|
Footwear | Based on foot length in cm (EU 42 ≈ 27cm foot) |
Tops | Based on chest circumference in cm |
Trousers | Waist + inseam in cm, or EU number |
Gloves | Hand circumference in cm |
Footwear: EU Size Conversion
EU Size | UK Size | US Men | US Women | Foot Length (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
36 | 3.5 | 4 | 5.5 | 22.5 |
37 | 4 | 4.5 | 6 | 23 |
38 | 5 | 5.5 | 7 | 23.5 |
39 | 6 | 6.5 | 8 | 24.5 |
40 | 6.5 | 7 | 8.5 | 25 |
41 | 7 | 7.5 | 9 | 25.5 |
42 | 8 | 8.5 | 10 | 26.5 |
43 | 9 | 9.5 | 11 | 27 |
44 | 10 | 10.5 | 12 | 28 |
45 | 11 | 11.5 | 13 | 28.5 |
46 | 12 | 12.5 |
| 29.5 |
47 | 13 | 13.5 |
| 30 |
Most reliable method: Measure your foot length in cm and match to the chart. EU sizes are based on foot length, so this is more accurate than converting from UK/US.

Tops (Jackets, Shirts, Vests): EU Size Conversion
EU sizes for tops are based on half chest circumference.
EU Size | UK/US Size | Chest (cm) | Half Chest |
|---|---|---|---|
44-46 | XS | 84-88 | 42-44 |
48-50 | S | 88-96 | 44-48 |
52-54 | M | 96-104 | 48-52 |
56-58 | L | 104-112 | 52-56 |
60-62 | XL | 112-120 | 56-60 |
64-66 | XXL | 120-128 | 60-64 |
68-70 | 3XL | 128-136 | 64-68 |
Letter sizes (S/M/L): Most workwear brands also use S/M/L/XL, but the chest range varies by brand. Always check the size chart.
Why two numbers? EU size 52-54 covers a range. "52" is the smaller end, "54" is the larger end of that size bracket.

Trousers: EU Size Conversion
EU trouser sizes can be confusing - different systems are used:
System 1: EU Number
EU Size | UK/US Waist | Waist (cm) |
|---|---|---|
42 | 28 | 71-74 |
44 | 30 | 75-78 |
46 | 32 | 79-82 |
48 | 34 | 83-86 |
50 | 36 | 87-90 |
52 | 38 | 91-94 |
54 | 40 | 95-98 |
56 | 42 | 99-102 |
58 | 44 | 103-106 |
System 2: Waist/Inseam (German style)
Example: 52/32 = Waist 52 (EU) + 32 inch inseam
System 3: Waist cm / Length cm
Example: 88/82 = 88cm waist, 82cm inseam
Check which system the brand uses. Look at the size chart - if you see waist AND inseam measurements, that's System 2 or 3.

Gloves: EU Size Conversion
EU glove sizes = hand circumference in cm
EU Size | Hand Circumference | UK/US Size |
|---|---|---|
6 | 15-16 cm | XS |
7 | 17-18 cm | S |
8 | 19-20 cm | M |
9 | 21-22 cm | L |
10 | 23-24 cm | XL |
11 | 25-26 cm | XXL |
How to measure: Wrap a tape around your palm at the widest point (excluding thumb), make a loose fist.
Country Variations in EU
EU sizes should be standardized, but in practice there are variations:
Country | Tendency | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|
Germany | True to EU standard | Reference point |
Italy | Often runs 1-2 sizes smaller | Size up |
France | Slightly smaller than DE | May need to size up |
Scandinavia | Designed for layering, roomier | True to size |
UK brands using EU | Often converted from UK, check carefully | Verify measurements |
Italian brands especially: A "Medium" in an Italian brand may fit like a "Small" in German brands. Always check chest measurements in cm.

Reading Size Charts: What to Look For
Good size chart includes:
- Actual garment measurements (not body measurements)
- Measurements in cm (not just EU number)
- Multiple measurements (chest, length, sleeve, etc.)
Body measurement vs Garment measurement:
Type | Meaning | How to Use |
|---|---|---|
Body | Your body measurements | Starting point |
Garment | The actual clothing dimensions | More accurate for fit |
Always prefer garment measurements. If a size chart shows "Chest: 110cm" as garment measurement, that jacket measures 110cm around the chest. Compare to your chest + desired ease.

Workwear-Specific Sizing Notes
Safety footwear:
- Add 0.5-1cm to account for toe cap
- Different brands have different internal dimensions for same EU size
- Composite toe has thicker profile than steel
Hi-vis jackets:
- Often sized larger to fit over other clothing
- Check if measurements are "over other garments" or standalone
Work trousers:
- Knee pad pocket placement varies
- "Regular" length differs by country (typically 80-82cm in EU)
- "Short" and "Long" usually ±4cm
Work gloves:
- Coated gloves may run tighter
- Cut-resistant gloves are often thicker = tighter fit
- Size up if using liner gloves
Common Conversion Mistakes
1. Assuming 1:1 conversion exists
EU 42 doesn't always equal UK 8. Measure your foot.
2. Using US sizes directly
US sizes are approximately 1.5-2 sizes different from EU. Always convert.
3. Ignoring brand differences
A "Large" isn't universal. Two brands, same EU size, can fit very differently.
4. Not accounting for garment type
A slim-fit EU 52 jacket fits smaller than a regular-fit EU 52.
